Photo: FedEx freighter aircraft line-up at New Delhi. One of the planes has a very interesting history.

If you observe the photo correctly, there is something unusual about this photo. Don't fully scroll down. Try to see only the photo and see if you can spot the feature? The answer is below the photograph.

The line-up consists one each of the wide-body freighter aircraft operated to India by FedEx Express. In the foreground is the Boeing 777F, followed by the Airbus A310-300F, and the venerable tri-engined McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) MD-11F, the favourite aircraft of Bangalore Aviation regular and prolific spotter, M. Azizul Islam of London. (See his over 6,300 photos here).

Many people ask why do we spotters go to such lengths to take photographs of planes? Its simple. Apart from their beauty, behind every plane, there is a story, there is a history.

The Boeing 777 freighter in the picture N850FD has a very interesting story.

In keeping with FedEx Express' tradition of naming aircraft after the children of its employees, the aircraft is named Saad, after Saad Zia, the seven-month-old son of New Jersey based staffer Kashif Zia. This very aircraft, N850FD, is featured by FedEx in its media centre to highlight this tradition.

N850FD also has another notable achievement. It was delivered by Boeing to FedEx Express on September 25, 2009. In February 2010 this aircraft was given a special livery (see video of the decal application) and was temporarily called "Panda Express" to commemorate its carriage of two giant Pandas non-stop from Washington DC Dulles airport in the United States, back to Chengdu in China.

The plane returned back to its normal livery in September 2010.

Images: Boeing introduces new dual tip winglets. A throwback to the MD-11?

US airframer Boeing unveiled a new dual winglet design concept for the 737 MAX.



The new Advanced Technology winglet is expected to provide an additional 1.5% fuel-burn improvement, on top of the 10-12 percent improvement already offered on the new-engine variant. Compared to today’s wingtip technology, which provides up to a 4 percent fuel-burn advantage at long ranges, the Advanced Technology winglet provides a total fuel-burn improvement of up to 5.5 percent on the same long routes.

In a way the new winglet design reminds one of the venerable McDonnell Douglas MD-11 which is now owned by Boeing.

Guest Post: The unique air cargo industry

The air cargo industry is quite obviously different from the passenger airline industry. Beyond both offering services that mostly focus on transportation via air the two industries share little else. Let's get into it.

For passenger airlines, the exchange of services (and in some cases, goods) is pretty much entirely contained within the airport or the aircraft. Passenger airlines offer an airport to airport service where travel and accommodation beyond these gateways is ultimately up to the passenger.

The cargo industry offers a very different service. When I worked for a major international cargo service (full disclosure: DHL is the company I previously worked for so my goal is to approach this from an academic and unbiased narrative), we offered what we called "door-to-door" service. That is, a company employee would pick up a package from a customer's home or warehouse and the package(s) would be delivered to the home or final destination of wherever the customer required. Customers were not required to drive to the airport and check their cargo in with the airline and then have another person at the closest airport that the airline served to the package's final destination waiting to pick it up.

Cargo carriers also deal with the logistics of offering a "door-to-door" service. That means massive fleets of everything from vans and trucks to aircraft, bicycles, motorcycles, cargo ships, trains, and I've even seen branded segways. It is easily surmised from this point that there is a lot more overhead and operational costs to be able to maintain these kinds of service. To be able to control these extra costs there are some operational differences that vary from the passenger transport business.

First is the aircraft. Cargo aircraft operate entirely different schedules and have an entirely different set of costs than passenger aircraft. The biggest advantage is the regulations that mandate the amount of maintenance required on the aircraft on a regular basis. Now don't think that these cargo aircraft are deathtraps - they just aren't. They are immaculate aircraft. They just don't require some of the more in-depth inspections that passenger aircraft are required to go through. This provides a benefit to the cargo airlines in the form of reduced operating costs.

This also allows many cargo carriers the ability to operate much older aircraft. This is another huge economic benefit. Buying a used MD-11 with tens of thousands of hours on the airframe is worlds cheaper than a brand new 747-400F(reighter). This directly puts the cargo carriers at another economic advantage. With lower costs for the acquisition of these assets cargo carriers can afford, in many cases, to purchase these aircraft outright instead of leasing them. This is just like purchasing a car and paying in full with cash - it just means no monthly payments, no interest payments, no outstanding liabilities in the ledger, and in a pinch assets that they can potentially liquidate to free up some cash. All of these aspects of the industry are utilized, particularly by the American based cargo carriers.

Cargo carriers almost exclusively operate at night. This provides a multitude of benefits as well. First of all these night operations are essential for their time-sensitive deliveries. The deadline to ship a package is usually in the late afternoon so that people can still drop off packages one their way home from work and still be delivered to the other side of the country before noon the next day. This means mostly having night time operations to move the cargo.

Some cargo airlines deviate from this route though. One way this is done is by contracting out the air portion of cargo movement. Mostly that is done by paying a passenger airline or other carrier to carry cargo for them. You may be surprised to learn that some of the largest cargo carriers (measured by total tonnes carried) are passenger airlines. Delta and Southwest are constantly in the top 10 largest cargo carriers in the world, and it makes sense. Delta operates over 4,000 flights a day and there is cargo on just about every flight where UPS operations only about 1,000. Granted those 1,000 UPS flight are pure cargo and the 4,000 Delta are mostly passengers, they are still comparable.

Another way this is done is by purchasing space on a contract cargo carrier. FedEx does this with one company called Mountain Air Cargo. All of Mountain's aircraft are painted in FedEx logos and fly routes specified by FedEx but have their own non-FedEx call-signs and flight numbers. This is a great way for FedEx to be able to server smaller markets without having to purchase, maintain, and staff the smaller aircraft. This also allows for some cities to receive important and sensitive air cargo that can not be delivered by the large MD-11's or 747's. It is obvious that in some cases passenger and cargo operations are one in the same. The two may travel in different cabins of service but still are essential to quick and on-time delivery.

In some aspects cargo and passenger air carriers are very alike. When it comes to pure cargo carriers though, the air cargo industry leverages important economic benefits to create a very resilient and sustainable industry.

Plane spotting video: The Boeing heavies at Bangalore -- 744 Freighter, 777F, MD-11F, 747-400

Today's episode features Boeing heavy aircraft at Bengaluru International Airport, Bangalore.

Three freighters -- Lufthansa Cargo MD-11F, Singapore Airlines Cargo Boeing 744F MegaArk, AeroLogic Boeing 777F and a British Airways Boeing 747-400 heavily loaded with a full load of passengers, their baggage, and tanks full of fuel for its 11 hour flight to London Heathrow.

Observe the steep climb angle of the MD-11F which has the best climb angle of any modern jetliner. See a table of climb angles for Boeing aircraft. Also do observe the wings. Dropping at the start of takeoff, flexed at liftoff.

There is some commentary from fellow spotters. Next time, the video will be more stable as I am learning on how to use the tripod. In the mean time, enjoy the sights and sounds.

Plane spotting pictures: FedEx Express Boeing MD-11 freighter N524FE with Kollsman EFVS

Continuing with the trend of air cargo, this week's picture is of the MD-11F freighter N524FE of global shipping giant FedEx Express.

The MD-11 was the update to the venerable McDonnell Douglas DC-10. After a long career with many an airline, the last MD-11 passenger flight was performed on February 20, 2010 from New Delhi to Helsinki as AY022 by Finnair. Now MD-11's form a large portion of the world's cargo fleet.

This MD-11F flies in from Paris via Dubai, spends the night at Bangalore and flies back to Paris via Mumbai in the morning. It is tied down with almost 30 metric tonnes of weight on the nose gear, may be to counter-balance the third engine located on the tail of the aircraft. Also observe the infra-red enhanced flight vision system (EFVS) embedded in the nose cone made by Kollsman, Inc.

Bangalore bound FedEx Express Boeing MD-11F declares emergency diverts to Mumbai

A FedEx Express Boeing MD-11F registration N579FE performing flight FX-5062 from Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Bangalore, India, declared a full emergency after receiving a fire indication in the lower belly cargo hold, and diverted to Mumbai, CSI airport.

The aircraft landed safely at 18:24 local (12:54 UTC) and after inspection the alarm was found to be false. The full emergency conditions at Mumbai airport were withdrawn at 18:56 (13:26 UTC).

The aircraft is still at Mumbai airport at the time of this report.

The airline released a statement to Bangalore Aviation
The FedEx flight Fx 5062 made an emergency landing into Mumbai (BOM) at 18.34 p.m. on October 22, 2010 due to a fire indication in the lower belly compartment of the aircraft. Normal safety procedures were followed and the flight landed safely at Mumbai (BOM) airport; the aircraft and the crew are safe.

On detailed inspection of the aircraft, no fire was detected. Currently, further investigation is underway.

No disruption occurred at Mumbai (BOM) airport.
False alarms are not an unusual occurrence in air cargo operations and prudence is a must. Last year a Singapore Airlines freighter to Amsterdam, had its fire suppression system activated due to emanations from mangoes.

Just last month, a UPS Boeing 747-400 freighter crashed at Dubai killing Capt. Doug Lampe and First Officer Matthew Bell. The preliminary report of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority indicates the pilots reporting smoke in the cockpit prior to that tragic crash.

Photos: Lufthansa Cargo MD-11F freighter in full ground operation

Today's picture shows Lufthansa Cargo's Boeing MD-11F freighter registration D-ALCC in full ground operations at Bangalore. D-ALCC was delivered to Lufthansa Cargo in 1998.

The aircraft features a forward port side cargo door of 140 in x 102 in or 3.56 m x 2.59 m (see the edge of the door open on the top of the aircraft). The main deck volume is 15,530 cubic feet (447 m3) and the aircraft can carry a maximum payload of 200,151 lb or close to 91 metric tonnes (about eight truckloads full).

Due to the lack of a seaport and also the high tech nature of its industry and large food and flower exports, Bangalore leads India in air-freight usage as a percentage of GSDP. Lufthansa Cargo is a major player Bangalore's air freight market, thanks to being one of the first to commence regularly scheduled cargo operations in the city, on September 26, 1989. This long term commitment is paying handsome dividends today. The cargo division operates five MD-11F flights a week and the passenger side operates a daily Boeing 747-400 which gives the airline plenty of cargo hold space.

In the photo you can see the frenetic pace at which cargo is unloaded and re-loaded to ensure the aircraft is turned around in under 90 minutes. The photo shows classic cargo operations. Large size pallets are loaded on the main deck from the left main cargo door. Smaller pallets are loaded in to the belly from the right belly door. In the background stands a bag loader at the ready to load last minute urgent cargo which is not palletised. Also observe, unlike passenger operations, where the human boarding is from the left of the plane, in cargo operations it is from the right to prevent any fouling with the main cargo door which is also on the left.

The largest operator of the MD-11F is US delivery company FedEx Express with 58 followed by Lufthansa Cargo with 18. Sadly Lufthansa Cargo lost one aircraft, D-ALCQ recently in Saudi Arabia.

Lufthansa Cargo increases MD-11F flights ex Bangalore and Chennai to Frankfurt

This week onwards, Lufthansa Cargo has increased its freighter service to Frankfurt ex Bangalore and Chennai to four MD-11F flights a week by adding an additional freighter into its existing network in India.

Spotting images: Boeing and Russian freighters

Thanks to a technology based economy (sorry world, but Bangalore is a lot more than just BPO outsourcing), Bangalore has always been a preferred destination for air cargo.

Bio-technology, electronics, aviation, pharmaceuticals, high-end precision engineering, floriculture, fresh produce, and the outsourcing industry which buys tons of imported computers, ensure that Bangalore is the leading hub for air cargo in Southern India, ahead of Chennai and Hyderabad, and third behind Mumbai (the economic capital of India) and the national capital New Delhi.

Boeing and Airbus: 40 years of rivalry and one-upmanship - Part two

Continuing the story on the forty year old rivalry between Airbus and Boeing from yesterday, we pick up the rivalry from the mid 1980s till date.

Kingfisher Airlines Airbus A330-200 VT-VJK Bangalore AviationFollowing the success of the A320, Airbus next introduced the four engined A340 and twin-engine A330 mid-sized aircraft in 1987. While the A340 was designed to compete in the long distance over-water intercontinental routes, Airbus intended the A330 to compete directly in the ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operation Performance Standards) market, i.e. the Boeing 767, but airlines purchased it to replace the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 since the A330 is 38% more fuel efficient. The A330's fuselage and wings are virtually identical to the A340 thus offering a common rating for both aircraft a'la Boeing 767/757. Both the A340 and A330 borrow heavily from the A320 fly-by-wire and flightdeck, thus offering airlines the ability to move pilots between the narrow and wide-bodies with minimal training, again like the Boeing 767/757. The A340 was not as successful the A330 was. Singapore_Airlines_A340-500_9V-SGEBy the end of May 2009 a total of 1,021 aircraft of the A330 have been ordered (557 A330-200, 65 A330-200F and 399 A330-300) and 616 delivered (346 A330-200 and 270 A330-300) while a total of 385 A340s had been ordered (28 A340-200, 218 A340-300, 35 A340-500 and 104 A340-600) and 365 delivered (28 A340-200, 218 A340-300, 29 A340-500 and 90 A340-600). It is Singapore Airlines with an A340-500 that still holds the record for the world's longest non-stop commercial flight between Newark Liberty airport, USA and Singapore Changi.

Boeing responded the best way it could; by introducing the world's largest twin-engined jet the 777, commonly referred to as the "Triple Seven". Initially conceived as a triple engined jet to compete with the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and MD-11 and the Lockheed L1011 Tristar, the 777 can carry between 283 and 368 passengers in a three-class configuration and has a range from 5,235 to 9,380 nautical miles (9,695 to 17,372 km). Designed to bridge the capacity difference between the 767 and 747, the original 777-200 model first entered service in 1995 with United Airlines, and was stretched by 33.3 ft (10.1 m) as the 777-300 introduced in 1998. The 777-300ER (Extended Range) and 777-200LR (Long Range) variants entered service in 2004 and 2006, respectively, while a freighter version, the 777F, first flew in 2008. It's ease of use, passenger comfort, and operating economics have made it a favourite of airlines, and the 777 has blow the bottom out of the Airbus A340. With 77 777s, Singapore Airlines operates the largest 777 fleet of any airline, but will soon be passed by Emirates airlines. In total, 56 customers have placed orders for 1,107 777s, with 784 delivered as of May 31, 2009.

The Boeing 737 is the best selling commercial airliner of all time, with the 6,000th aircraft being delivered very recently. Goaded by the runaway success of the modern Airbus A320 Boeing initiated development of an updated series of 737, now called the 737 Classic, with the 737 Next Generation or Next Gen (737NG) program encompassing the -600, -700, -800 and -900 was announced on November 17, 1993. The first NG, the 2,843rd 737 built, to roll out was a -700, on December 8, 1996. The 737NG is essentially a new aircraft retaining important commonality from previous 737 models. The wing area is increased by 25% and span by 16 ft (4.9 m), which increased the total fuel capacity by 30%. Coupled with the new, quieter, fuel-efficient CFM56-7B engines range is increased by 900 NM. Boeing also bridged the generational gap with the A320 bringing in the full "glass cockpit" with six LCD screens and modern avionics. The passenger experience was also spruced up with improvements similar to those on the Boeing 777, featuring more curved surfaces and larger overhead bins. To compete with the A321 on April 27, 2007, Boeing delivered the first of the newest 737 variant, the 737-900ER, to launch customer Lion Air. Seating capacity is increased to 180 passengers in a 2-class configuration or 215 passengers in a single-class layout. Additional fuel capacity and standard winglets improve range to that of other 737NG variants. SpiceJet is the largest operator of the 737-900ER in India followed by Jet Airways.

On 19 December 2000, Airbus decided to end the three decade old monopoly of the Boeing 747 jumbo jet and formally launched the largest passenger aircraft in the world, the Airbus A380 superjumbo. The A380's upper deck extends along the entire length of the fuselage, which allows for a cabin with 50% more floor space than the next-largest airliner, the Boeing 747-400 and provides seating for 525 people in standard three-class configuration or up to 853 people in all economy class configurations. Most airlines have outfitted their A380s with uber-luxurious first class private suites, one even offering on-board showers. The first A380, serial number MSN001 and registration F-WWOW, was unveiled at a ceremony in Toulouse on January 18, 2005. Its maiden flight took place at 08:29 UTC (10:29 a.m. local time) April 27, 2005. The first aircraft delivered (MSN003, registered 9V-SKA) was handed over to launch customer Singapore Airlines on 15 October 2007 and entered commercial service on 25 October 2007 with an inaugural flight between Singapore and Sydney (flight number SQ380). Emirates was the second airline to take delivery of the A380 on 28 July 2008 and Qantas followed on 19 September 2008.

Major structural sections of the A380 are built in France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Due to their size, they are brought to the assembly hall in Toulouse in France by surface transportation which in the logistics world is considered a work of art. The front and rear sections of the fuselage are loaded on the Airbus Roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ship, Ville de Bordeaux, in Hamburg in northern Germany, from where the ship moves to the Mostyn docks in the United Kingdom to pick up the the gigantic wings, which are manufactured at Filton in Bristol and Broughton in North Wales. In Saint-Nazaire in western France, the ship trades the fuselage sections from Hamburg for larger, assembled sections, some of which include the nose. The ship unloads in Bordeaux. The ship then picks up the belly and tail sections by Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA (CASA) in Cádiz in southern Spain, and delivers them to Bordeaux. The A380 parts are then transported by barge to Langon, and by oversize road convoys to the assembly hall in Toulouse. After assembly, the aircraft are flown to Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport (XFW) to be furnished and painted. It takes 3,600 litres (950 US gallons) of paint to cover the 3,100 m2 (33,000 sq ft) exterior of an A380.

With the loss of the VLA (Very Large Aircraft) monopoly, Boeing is focussing its future dreams on an aircraft that would replace the 767 and over-take the A330. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a mid-sized, wide-body, twin-engine jet airliner currently under gauntlet development and is expected to have its first flight before the end of this month. It will carry between 210 and 330 passengers depending on variant and seating configuration and designed to be more fuel-efficient than earlier Boeing airliners and will be the first major airliner to use composite materials for most of its construction. The 787 also features a state of the art cockpit and passenger cabin. Boeing even offers its own version of the famous Airbus cabin "mood lighting".

Boeing featured its first 787 in a roll-out ceremony on July 8, 2007, at its Everett assembly factory, by which time it had become the fastest-selling wide-body airliner in history with nearly 600 orders. A total of 861 Boeing 787s have been ordered by 56 customers as of April 2009. Originally scheduled to enter service in May 2008 with Japan's All Nippon Airways, production has been delayed several times and is currently scheduled to enter into service in February 2010.

After initially claiming the A330 would be able to compete with the 787 Dreamliner, the massive success of the 787 prompted Airbus to develop and announce the A350XWB (eXtra Wide Body) which will become more of a competitor to the Boeing 777 as well as some models of the Boeing 787. The A350XWB cabin is 13 cm (5.1 in) wider at eye level than the competing Boeing 787, and 28 cm (11 in) narrower than the Boeing 777, and all A350 passenger models will have a range of at least 8,000 NM (15,000 km). Like the Boeing 787, the A350XWB will make extensive use of composite materials in place of the traditional aluminium, and have a state of the art cockpit. The fuselage will be of parallel cross-section from Door 1 to Door 4 thus providing for maximum volume in the passenger cabin. The plane has till date logged 483 orders and is currently under development and scheduled to enter service in 2013, about the same time the 787-9 variant of the Dreamliner will.

The typical takeoff and climb angles of all Boeing planes

In the recent issue of Boeing's AERO magazine there is an article titled Exceeding tire speed during takeoff in which there is this nice graphic that demonstrates the recommended take-off rotation and climb angles for all Boeing aircraft.

I was surprised that despite it's length, the Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet has a rotation angle of 10 degrees. Compare that to 7 to 9 degrees for the 737s and 777s. The king of the angle is the MD-11 with a take-off rotation of up to 10 degrees and a climb angle of a whopping 25 degrees. Then I remembered who made the F15 Eagles.

Tokyo Narita's main runway opens following FedEx MD-11F crash

The New Tokyo International Airport at Narita opened its main runway earlier this morning at 09:10 local (00:10 UTC) following yesterday's accident and crash of a FedEx Boeing MD-11 freighter which claimed both the crew and the aircraft.

The crash has shut down the 4,000 meter (13,123 ft) long main runway 16R/34L. The airport was forced to rely on the secondary Runway 16L/34R which, at 2,180 meters (7,152 ft) is just about half the the length of the main runway.

A spokesman for the airport said the first arrival was a Lufthansa intercontinental passenger flight from Frankurt at 09:24 (00:24 UTC)

The spokesman confirmed that the wreckage of the MD-11F was removed in the wee hours of this morning. He added that 101 flights were cancelled and about 50 were diverted to other Japanese airports since the crash.

In the meantime FedEx released the names of the two crew who perished in the accident.

Captain Kevin Kyle Mosley, 54, of Hillsboro, Oregon, USA, joined FedEx Express on May 1, 1996. He has 12,800 flying hours experience.

Video: FedEx MD-11 crashes at Tokyo Narita airport, crew killed, airport shut down

A FedEx MD-11 freighter registration number N526FE performing flight 80, from Guangzhou, China crashed at Tokyo Narita International Airport in heavy winds, and burst in to flames. The two crew on board were killed. The main runway at the international gateway airport to Tokyo has been shut down.

Most airlines have been forced to divert incoming flights to Tokyo Haneda, Osaka, Nagoya and other airports, as the longest runway of two at Narita has been closed.

The FedEx plane landed hard, tipped onto its left wing and burst into a bright orange fireball of flames, the video of the crash from Tokyo Broadcasting System shows. The three engined MD-11F an improvement of the old DC10 made by McDonnell Douglas, now a part of Boeing, is the mainstay of FedEx's freighter fleet who has 58 aircraft in its fleet.


This crash is reminiscent of the July 31, 1997 crash of another FedEx MD-11F at Newark. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) faulted the pilots for the crash of FedEx Flight 14, from Anchorage, Alaska to Newark.

Airport officials are unclear how long the main runway would be closed at Narita. International Japanese carriers Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have cancelled 29 and 10 flights respectively.

Having flown frequently to Narita I can attest to the tough time pilots have in the frequently occurring crosswinds. Both runways are aligned in a roughly North South direction (156/336 degree headings on the compass), and the airport often has strong crosswinds in an easterly and westerly direction. Paucity of land prevents the authorities from building a crossing runway at the airport.

Japan's meteorological agency had issued an advisory of gales for the area around the airport.

FedEx has put out a statement
A FedEx Express MD-11 was involved in an incident today en route from Guangzhou to Narita, with two crew members on board. The incident occurred upon landing. We are sad to report that there were no survivors.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of these crew members. This loss pains all of us at FedEx. Right now our focus is on doing everything we can to assist those involved at this difficult time.

We are thankful for the quick response of emergency teams on the ground and will continue to work closely with the applicable authorities as we seek to determine the cause for this tragic incident.

Widespread flight disruptions at Tokyo Narita airport following FedEx MD-11 crash

The crash of FedEx MD-11 freighter registration number N526FE performing flight 80, from Guangzhou, China at the New Tokyo International Airport at Narita has caused major disruptions in flight schedules.

The crash has shut down the 4,000 meter (13,123 ft) long main runway 16R/34L.

The airport is forced to rely on the secondary Runway 16L/34R which, at 2,180 meters (7,152 ft) is just about half the the length of the main runway.

Narita is the main gateway to Japan's capital Tokyo, and home to all of Tokyo's intercontinental flights, many of which are operated by the Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet. Unfortunately Boeing B747 and Airbus A380 operations are not permitted on the secondary runway. Even wide bodies like the Boeing 777, 767, MD-11, Airbus A340 and A330, will not be able to carry a full complement of passengers, baggage and fuel.


Air travel to and from Tokyo is going to be hard today.
