British Airways to commence 787 service to Hyderbad in March 2014

by Devesh Agarwal
Flag carrier British Airways will bring its latest aircraft, the 787-8 Dreamliner to India in the summer 2014 schedule which starts on March 30th. The aircraft has 214 seats in a three-class cabin layout with 35 business class seats, 25 economy plus, and 154 economy class seats. The aircraft features the latest cabin product of British Airways, though the economy class is the bone crunching nine-abreast seating.

Hyderabad will be the first destination in India, as the airline currently flies a daily 767-300 to the city with 189 seats in a three-class cabin layout with 24 business, 24 economy plus and 141 economy class seats.

The most rational explanation for the airline to operate the 787 to Hyderabad appears to be the similarity in size.

British Airways is also expanding routes using its new aircraft. Their A380 will begin flying between London Heathrow and Washington Dulles from September 1, 2014. The aircraft is already flying between London Heathrow and Los Angeles and Hong Kong direct, and will start services between London and Johannesburg in February 2014.

The airline's Boeing 787s will fly nonstop between London and Austin, Texas from March 3, 2014, Philadelphia, USA, from June 5 and Calgary, Canada from July 5, 2014. In addition to Hyderabad, the 787 will commence Chengdu, China as another Asian destination from May 5, 2014.

Dubai Airshow 2013 starts with record breaking orders

As expected the Dubai Airshow opened today with a record breaking order book.

Within three hours of opening, the show’s order tally reached US $162.6 billion – surpassing its previous record of US $155 billion record set in 2007 – with deals coming from Etihad Airways, Emirates Airline, flydubai and Qatar Airways.

The opening order came from Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways which announced a deal for 56 new Boeing 777s valued at US$25.2 billion at list prices, including related GE engines. The deal also sees Etihad become the launch customer for the 777-8X which is expected to enter service in 2022.

The airline also ordered 30 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, making Etihad the largest customer for the composite aircraft.

James Hogan, President and CEO, Etihad Airways said
“We rarely make announcements at air shows, but when we do the world listens,”
Dubai-headquartered Emirates Airline rapidly re-wrote the Dubai Airshow record with news of a US$99 billion purchase of Boeing and Airbus planes – which industry experts dubbed the largest-ever aircraft order in civil aviation.

The Emirates headline deal was for 150 Boeing 777X, plus 50 purchase rights, and an additional 50 Airbus A380 superjumbos - of which Emirates is currently the largest fleet operator.

Low-cost airline FlyDubai weighed in with a US$11.4 billion order for 111 Boeing 737s and 738s, and then Qatar Airways topped off the morning’s historic agreements with the signing of a US$19 billion letter of intent for 54 Boeing 777s.

Boeing, Korean Air finalize order for 12 Twin-Aisle Airplanes

By BA Staff

Flag carrier Korean Air has finalised an order on US airframer Boeing, for five 747-8i Intercontinentals and six 777-300ER (Extended Range) jetliners that was originally announced as a commitment during the Paris Air Show earlier in June.

In addition to that commitment, the airline also ordered one additional 787 Dreamliner. The value of the combined order is valued at $3.9 billion at current list prices.

With this order the airline's backlog of 747-8 Intercontinentals and 777-300ERs expands to ten aircraft of each type. The order also increases Korean Air's 787 backlog to 11.

Korean Air is currently the only airline in the world to order both the passenger and freighter variations of the 747-8, the 747-8i and 747-8F. The airline also became the first international carrier to simultaneously operate both the 747-8F and 777F Freighter. The airline, along with German flag carrier Deutsche Lufthansa, are the only two carriers to simultaneously operate both the VLA (very large aircraft) of Boeing and Airbus, the 747-8i and A380-800.

Korean Air's current fleet of operates 90 Boeing passenger airplanes in its fleet; 737s, 747s and 777s.

The airline also operates an all-Boeing cargo fleet of 27 747-400F, 747-8F and 777F freighters. The airline's Aerospace Division is also a key Boeing partner on both the 747-8 and 787 programs, supplying the distinctive raked wing-tips for each model.

Aircraft News: A380 deliveries to Korean Air and Emirates, 787-9 completes engine test

by BA.com staff

We have a three pieces of aircraft related news for you this Friday morning.

7th A380 delivered to Korean Air

Seoul-based Korean Air took delivery of its 7th Airbus A380 earlier this week, with Manufacturer Serial Number (MSN) 126. The aircraft is registered as HL7621 and left Tolouse on 28th August. Korean Air's A380 are noted for having one of the lowest-density and most premium configurations in the sky with just 407 seats in a 3-class configuration (12F / 94J / 301Y).

36th A380 delivered to Emirates

Dubai-based Emirates has taken delivery of its 36th Airbus A380 yesterday, with a MSN of 132. The aircraft has been registered as A6 - EEK. Interestingly, Emirates fleet of Airbus A380s has now surpassed Lufthansa's fleet of Boeing 747s as the world's second largest fleet of double-deck passenger aircraft. Lufthansa now operates 31 Boeing 747s (split as 22x 747-400 and 9x 747-8i), but both carriers still trail behind British Airways' fleet of 55 Boeing 747-400s.

Analysis: Qantas more than doubles full year profit as rival Virgin Australia loses money

by Vinay Bhaskara

Australian airline group Qantas Group has reported an underlying pre-tax profit of AUD 192 million (US $171.5 million) for the year ended 30th June 2013, more than doubling from AUD 95 million for the year ending 30th June 2012.

Broken up by segment, profit for Qantas mainline domestic fell 21% year-over-year (YOY) to AUD 365 million thanks to a fare war with Australia's second largest airline, Virgin Australia. Profits also fell 20% YOY at Qantas freight on Asian demand weakness to AUD 36 million, while Jetstar Group saw a deep 32% YOY decline in profit to AUD 132 million thanks to the start up costs of Jetstar Japan and Jetstar Hong Kong. Profits at the loyalty (frequent flyer) division remained strong, rising 13% YOY to AUD 260 million, but the biggest improvement came from the reduction in losses at Qantas' international division, with losses halving to AUD 246 million from AUD 484 million YOY.

Group operating revenues rose 1% to AUD 15.9 billion while operating costs remained essentially flat thanks to a 2% reduction in fuel costs. This contributed to a 5% reduction year over year in unit costs excluding fuel (cost per available seat kilometer - CASK ex. fuel), which was partly offset by a 2% decline in yields.

For the year, capacity as measured by available seat kilometers (ASKs) was essentially flat YOY, while passenger traffic in revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) was down around 1%. However, passengers carried actually grew 3% YOY to 48.3 million as the Group re-balanced capacity towards shorter haul routes.

For Qantas, the strong improvement in its international results was a partial validation of the turnaround plan announced last year with an eye towards returning the international division to profitability by fiscal year 2015. The biggest part of that turnaround plan, a tie-up with Emirates, has also been partially validated, as it contributed to the results via a doubling of bookings onto code share services to Europe (versus the previous partnership with British Airways). And the partnership's contribution should continue to improve into FY14 as much of the partnership has not been fully implemented and FY13 had to deal with the start-up costs of launching operations in Dubai.

Moreover, the cost-base on international operations improved 5% thanks to reduction of loss-making routes, aircraft retirements, and the reconfiguration of 9 Boeing 747s and 12 A380s improving fleet economics. Qantas International has certainly paid the price for poor strategic vision in the sense of not taking advantage of the rise of Asia over the past decade. But the decision to join hands with Emirates and cut loss-making routes from the international network was the right decision. Bigger is not always better. By reducing some of the lower yielding destinations like Frankfurt and Buenos Aires, Qantas has cut its way towards profitability.

And the turnaround domestically has allowed Qantas to re-focus efforts on the group's primary profit center; Domestic. As Qantas struggled to re-make its international operations over the past few years, Australia's second largest carrier, Virgin Australia evolved from a low cost nuisance into a true full service rival. Having reconfigured its short haul fleet of Boeing 737s and Embraer E190s with a business class cabin, Virgin Australia even took a major shot across Qantas' bow by introducing Airbus A330-200 aircraft with lie-flat business class seats on lucrative transcontinental routes from Perth in 2011.

But Qantas now has the funds and shareholder confidence to fight back. Earlier this month, they announced a new updated product on its own fleet of 10 transcontinental A330s with lie-flat suites aimed at clawing back market share from Virgin Australia. Qantas also announced a new premium product for five Boeing 717-200s, to be flown by subsidiart QantasLink in competition with Virgin Australia Embraer E190s out of Australia's capital Canberra.

Even as Qantas is revving up for a fight, Virgin Australia continues to struggle. With a jumbled strategy of acquisitions aimed at modeling Virgin Australia Holdings after Qantas Group (including the transformation of regional provider Skywest into Virgin Australia Regional and the purchase of a 60% stake in ultra low cost carrier [ULCC] Tigerair Australia) weighing on results, Virgin Australia reported a post-tax loss of AUD 98.1 million for FY13. The competitive tide in the Australian market, for the moment, appears to have shifted back in Qantas' favor.

Airbus A380 completes five years in service with Emirates

by BA Staff

Emirates A380 arriving at London Heathrow airport. CC License
The Airbus A380 marked a major milestone this month with the five-year anniversary of its service entry in the fleet of Emirates – the largest operator and and largest customer for the superjumbo.

This Dubai-based carrier has conducted some 20,000 round trip flights since initiating A380 operations in August 2008 with a Dubai-New York flight. In five years, Emirates’ fleet has grown to include 35 A380s, which have flown some 265 million kilometres in total, while travelling to 37 airports worldwide and carrying more than 18 million passengers.

With Emirates, the A380 has served a variety of routes to some of the world’s key destinations, ranging from its longest non-stop flight – Dubai to New York (11,023 km.) – to the shortest, covering 1,900 km. between Hong Kong and Bangkok. Along with major hub airports, the aircraft is used to such cities as Jeddah in Saudi Arabia; Toronto, Canada; Manchester, England and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The airline’s growing network will add service with this behemoth jetliner to Brisbane, Australia; Los Angeles; Mauritius; and Zurich by January 2014.

More than 7,000 cabin crew members support Emirates’ growing A380 fleet, along with nearly 670 flight deck crew. As a humorous anecdote, we reported a story where the Emirates flight crew found the A380 too quiet to sleep!!! Read the story here.

Emirates further optimised A380 operations through Dubai International’s Concourse A that opened in January 2013 as the world’s first purpose-built A380 terminal, serving as the dedicated home of a fleet that will grow with its total 90 aircraft on order. Read the story here.

Coinciding with the five-year anniversary, Emirates partnered with Google to launch the world’s first A380 “street view.” To take this interactive tour of the Emirates A380 cabin – which features private suites and shower spas in first class, flat-bed seats in business and extra room with custom lighting in economy class – read our story.

Malaysia Airlines posts operating profit in Q2 2013

by Vinay Bhaskara

Newly minted oneworld alliance member Malaysia Airlines saw progress in Q2 2013 in its corporate turnaround plan as the carrier swung to a RM (Malaysian Ringgit) 8 million (US $2.4 million) operating profit from an operating loss of RM 102 million (US $31.0 million) during the same period a year prior.

The performance was buoyed by 14% revenue growth on a 19% increase in capacity. Traffic grew 29% pushing seat load factors to a 10 year high of 80%. Q2 marked the fourth consecutive quarter of positive cash-flow from operations and Group cash balance improved to RM 5.4 billion (US $1.64 billion).

Net losses for Q2 were reduced 50% to RM 176 million ($53.5 million) as the carrier increased productivity and controlled costs; especially fuel expense, which fell 7.5% year-over-year. For the first half of 2013, operating loss was RM 157 million (US $47.7 million) and net loss was RM 455 million (US $138.3 million - down from RM 409 million [US $124.4 million] and RM 521 million [US $158.3 million] respectively).

Said Malaysia Airlines Group CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya:
With the encouraging performance at the revenue generation level, we can now focus on implementing more structural improvements, including enhancing our administration and support services. We will continue to improve operational effectiveness such as continued improvement in our On Time Performance, turn times on our aircraft, better engineering service turnaround, reducing service disruptions, precise material and inventory management, and much more which will further contribute to the bottom-line in the future.
Quarters three and four are traditionally the strongest for Malaysia Airlines, and the carrier has made its first Q2 operating profit in several years. The carrier still hopes to reach net profitability by the end of 2014 and claims that it is on track to meet that metric. Having taken delivery of 6 A380s, 7 A330s, and 8 Boeing 737-800s over the past 12 months, passengers carried grew to 4.2 million passengers.

Premium cabin demand received a boost on the introduction of the 494-seat Airbus A380, with premium cabin (First and Business) demand up 36% year-over-year on a 17% increase in capacity. The A380 has already been deployed to London, Paris, and Hong Kong from Malaysia Airlines' hub at Kuala Lampur.

Malaysia Airlines is one the largest overseas carriers in India, and is slated to launch services to Kochi in September

Airbus A380 airline-wise seating configurations compared

by Devesh Agarwal

Early next year Qatar Airways will become the eleventh operator of the Airbus A380 super-jumbo. We have researched and produce below an airline-wise A380 seat configuration infographic for comparison. Airbus had original projected the aircraft in a three class 555 seat configuration.

We have also reached some conclusions which are produced below the infographic. Study the infographic and see what conclusions you derive. Compare them with ours, and please post your thoughts and conclusions via a comment.
Airbus A380 seating configuration airline-wise deck-wise (U=Upper, L=Main/Lower), class-wise (CT = class total)
Qatar's CEO Mr. Akbar Al-Bakar has indicated a first class of eight seats and a business class of 52 seats, both on the upper deck. The economy class will have 457 seats, the most by any A380 operator till now.

The main deck (also called the lower deck) will be all economy class, but most likely, there will also be, a small section on the upper deck. The exact configuration has not been revealed as yet, but a study of the Emirates'A380 configuration of the same 517 seats leads us to expect about 30 economy class seats on the upper deck and 427 on the main deck.

With a total configured capacity of 517 seats, Qatar will have the densest A380, second only to Lufthansa which operates its A380s in a 526 seat configuration. However Emirates which also has a 517 seat configured A380 packs seven more economy class passengers on the main deck when compared to Lufthansa to take top spot in the "stuffed" ranking.

Korean Air operates the least dense A380 with 407 seats, just two less than launch operator Singapore Airlines.

Singapore Airlines offers the widest business class seat
The dual configurations of the Singapore Airlines A380 also allows us to derive that for each of its "over the top" ultra-wide 1-2-1 business class seats, the airline loses 3.385 economy class seats. The airline adds 26 business class seats on the upper deck and loses 88 economy class seats. A similar deduction can be derived for Australia based Qantas as well.

The world's largest operator of A380s, Dubai based Emirates airline, sacrifices a full 28 seats to provide crew sleeping accommodation in the rear of the aircraft on its A380s configured for long distance flights (Dubai Australia and Dubai North America). That area is apparently so quiet, that pilots who are accustomed to a hum, are unable to sleep due to the silence. (Read story here).

_________________________________________________________________________________

This post is meant to serve as an introduction to a trip I will be taking later this summer. The trip report will be updated as I actually do the flying.

So the genesis of this trip is that I am taking a trip to India in August of this year, and on the return I will be stopping over in Europe to visit with family.

Now within the parameters of a standard United Airlines award ticket, I booked the itinerary you see above, Economy Class going to India, and First Class on the return. My first step was finding award inventory in the India-US direction, which is incredibly difficult to do in the summer time, as this is a peak period for US origin travel to India. I eventually managed to find a one-stop from Newark via Munich to Mumbai on August 7th, but instead I opted for a more circuitous Newark-Hamburg-Istanbul-Mumbai routing. This routing would allow me to visit two new airports (Hamburg and Istanbul), and fly a new aircraft type (the Airbus A321 --  most of my short haul flying has been on United and American, neither of whom currently have A321s) in the spirit of a true aviation connoisseur.

The advantages of this routing are that I have a comfortable 4 hour layover in Hamburg (allowing me to shower in the lounge) as opposed to the hour long sprint I'd have to endure in Munich, as well as 4 hours to review the Turkish Airlines CIP lounge in Istanbul, considered by many to be the best business class lounge in the world. It also allows me to provide a review of Turkish Airlines' service offering in economy class on flights between India and the West. And the Istanbul-Mumbai sector is currently scheduled on a Boeing 777-300ER leased from Jet Airways.

Turkish Airlines Business Class (CIP) Lounge - Istanbul

The return flights from Mumbai are also notable. On a first class award, I will have a business class flight overnight from Bangkok to Mumbai, and then I will be able to experience Thai Airways famed first class services in Bangkok- including a golf cart ride to the lounge, hour long complementary Thai massages, and a full service restaurant. Then I will be on to the highlight of my trip; First Class on the Thai Airways A380 between Bangkok and Frankfurt, my first time in international first class and my first time flying an A380. Then its a couple of hours of layover in Frankfurt and off to Zurich,.

Thai Airways Royal First Class on A380
Image Credit - Australian Business Traveler
Now its the flights home to the US that I am still unsure about. The only flight home I could find at the time of booking was the Air Canada itinerary displayed. However, what I am banking on is that Lufthansa tends to release its first class award inventory to United 14 days before departure; Lufthansa First Class and the First Class Terminal at Frankfurt would be  a perfect way to end this trip. Either way, I am excited for my journey!

Malaysia Airlines to upgrade Hong Kong route to Airbus A380

Superjumbo replaces existing Boeing 737 service

by Devesh Agarwal

National carrier Malaysia Airlines will upgrade its twice daily Boeing 737-800 operated Kuala Lumpur Hong Kong route to an Airbus A380 effective May 1, 2013. Hong Kong will be the third A380 destination for the carrier after London and Paris. The new schedule is:

MH72 departs Kuala Lumpur 09:15 arrives Hong Kong 13:05
MH73 departs Hong Kong 14:45 arrives Kuala Lumpur at 18:25

The 494 seater A380 will increase by about 50% the existing capacity of twice daily Boeing 737s, and will also introduce a first class cabin on this premium route offering eight seats.
