Please offer your opinion on the new look of Bangalore Aviation

Dear Readers and Friends,

For the last week, Vedant has been diligently working on the new Bangalore Aviation site. It is a major work involving significant effort, since we are shifting platforms from Blogger to WordPress.

Please keep in mind, WordPress works differently than Blogger, and images are not yet fully imported. Also WP uses categories, tags and authors separates, while Blogger uses only tags. The template uses Categories for classification of stories, so we are working on this too.

The new categories are proposed in the menu. Suggestions on categories are also welcome.

Please visit www.avgeek.in to see the work in progress, and then please come back here and post your comments on what you see. Please offer your suggestions what should be changed.

The new template is fully responsive, and should work well with tablets and mobile phones too.

Thanks in advance for your time, support and effort.

AAI makes progress on PPP for six airports

by BA Staff

Yesterday, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced that it has invited the Request For Qualification (RFQ) for selection of the prospective bidders for Chennai and Lucknow Airports for conversion of these airports to a Public Private Partnership (PPP). The RFQs will remain open till mid-October, and applications are allowed from a single entity or a consortium.

As per a report from the Press Information Bureau,
The SPV shall be formed for this purpose. In order to secure representation of the Airports Authority of India on the Board of the SPV, the Concession Agreement will include a provision for issue of a golden share in accordance with a Shareholders’ Agreement that would form part of the Concession Agreement.
The concessionaire can levy tariffs for aeronautical services including the User Development Fee (UDF) as may be determined by AERA to start with. Such charges would be revised normally once every five years by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) in accordance with the AREA Act. The RFP would indicate the parameters for determining charges for aeronautical services as well as the UDF
It is expected that similar RFQs will be opened at the remaining four airports earmarked for transition to PPP (Kolkata, Jaipur, Guwhati, and Ahmedabad) soon. No applicant will be allowed to participate in the PPP at more than two of the six airports involved.

The new PPPs will help bolster AAI's finances at a time when the authority is struggling under the weight of nearly Rs. 1,900 Crore worth of unpaid dues from several airlines.

Air India reduces Delhi - Tokyo

by BA Staff

As per the Airline Route blog, Indian national carrier Air India is reducing Delhi-Tokyo Narita this winter from five flights per week to four utilizing Boeing 777-200LR equipment. The new schedules for the flight are as follow:

AI 306 departs Delhi at 21:10 on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays ~ arrives to Tokyo Narita at 08:00 the next morning.

AI 307 departs Tokyo at 11:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays ~ arrives back in Delhi at 16:50 the same day - in time for connections to the evening bank of domestic departures.

Air India had been looking at sending its efficient fleet of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners to Tokyo, but complications have arisen due to problems with the Japanese government. However, there has been progress towards getting Air India's Dreamliners approved to fly into Japan, and as Air India is set to take delivery of at least two more Dreamliners by the end of 2013, this plan could shift.

by BA.com staff

We have a three pieces of aircraft related news for you this Friday morning.

Seoul-based Korean Air took delivery of its 7th Airbus A380 earlier this week, with Manufacturer Serial Number (MSN) 126. The aircraft is registered as HL7621 and left Tolouse on 28th August. Korean Air's A380 are noted for having one of the lowest-density and most premium configurations in the sky with just 407 seats in a 3-class configuration (12F / 94J / 301Y).

36th A380 delivered to Emirates

Dubai-based Emirates has taken delivery of its 36th Airbus A380 yesterday, with a MSN of 132. The aircraft has been registered as A6 - EEK. Interestingly, Emirates fleet of Airbus A380s has now surpassed Lufthansa's fleet of Boeing 747s as the world's second largest fleet of double-deck passenger aircraft. Lufthansa now operates 31 Boeing 747s (split as 22x 747-400 and 9x 747-8i), but both carriers still trail behind British Airways' fleet of 55 Boeing 747-400s.

Infographic: The Boeing 777 is Safe

by Bangalore Aviation Staff

After the crash of Asiana Flight 214 at San Francisco International airport this past Saturday, a media firestorm erupted around the Boeing 777 aircraft involved in the crash. Fears grew among much of the traveling public and non-aviation media that the 777 was in fact an unsafe aircraft to fly. This is simply not the case. Bangalore Aviation has prepared the following infographic to help allay some of the safety concerns that have arisen around the aircraft.

Design evolution of the Bangalore Aviation logo

by Devesh Agarwal

Over the years, with your support, Bangalore Aviation has evolved from a simple personal blog, to become India's largest aviation blog, and in the "top 15" of the world.

One the key drivers of this growth is our belief in "CIP" or Continuous Improvement Process. We believe in taking feedback from YOU, our dear readers, and trying to apply them as much as possible. You will observe we do not limit comments on the site, except those are foul in language or non-contributory in nature.

As the site has grown, it has undergone a refreshment of its logo. Today, a small story on the evolution of the Bangalore Aviation logo over the last five years.

The logo in 2008 when we commenced. It was simple and used basic Word-Art techniques.

Bangalore Aviation logo circa 2008
In 2009, we modified the logo to include the nose of G-OIJB "Ed Force One" the Astraeus Airlines Boeing 757 used by the music group Iron Maiden for their tour of India. Bangalore Aviation obtained exclusive photos of the group at Bangalore Airport.

Bangalore Aviation logo circa 2009

In late 2010, we realised that the logo needed to be refined to give a more professional look on our business cards. We also wanted to introduce brand colours to signify many things. We wanted colours from the flags of the United States and India, representing the duality of our site. The colour orange, signifies intellect, blue signifies the sky and world of aviation, and white represents purity of thought and integrity. Curved lines were brought in to signify creativity, forward and upward.

Bangalore Aviation logo circa 2010
However, the 2010 logo was a little jarring on the eyes when viewed on the website and could not be easily made in to a square icon to be used on various social media sites. In parallel, 2011 saw Bangalore Aviation gain traction, and a surge in traffic and reputation. By end 2011, based on suggestions from mobile users, we needed to refresh the Bangalore Aviation site, give it a new magazine style front page, along with a new look, brand, and a mobile site.

While I worked on the site itself, I contacted an old and dear friend, Narayan Gopalan, an avid aviation enthusiast and regular Bangalore Aviation reader. Narayan is a communication designer by profession, who has over seven years of work experience with industry big-wigs like Adobe Software India, and Ray + Keshavan The Brand Union, and specialises in working in branding, identity, and interactive domains.

Narayan took up my request, on a pro-bono basis, and I am very thankful for his contribution.

His first version was an evolution of the existing logo. In Narayan's words
Attached, please find an idea for a logo, and extending the branding across collateral. I have used the same colors but modified the shades a bit to contrast and soothe the eye. The concept behind the logo form (the symbol) is the juxtaposition of a cloud (symbolizing the sky) and the icon of a "thought bubble" - representing the thought, and analysis concept. The icon of a plane taking off gives it the aviation touch.

I have used the same structure of your existing site, but changed a few elements. The idea was to keep it simple, without too many colors and gradients so the main focus is on the news and reading the same without distractions. The background image, can be keep changing as shown in the 2 examples.
Bangalore Aviation logo circa 2012 first revision
Narayan and me continued evolving the logo through a series of explorations and revisions. The next major revision, and a precursor to the current logo keeps our original blue, orange, and white colours, highlighting the initials of Bangalore Aviation, B and A, along with the cloud representing both thought and the internet, and the aircraft icon taking off, representing aviation, and forward and upward movement representing the continuous improvement process.
Bangalore Aviation logo circa 2012 precursor revision
The final logo, which is our current logo circa 2012, as described by Narayan
is a play of typography combined with a unique element (the could) suffixed by a aviation related mnemonic
Current Bangalore Aviation logo circa 2012
From this logo, we have also developed two icon logos which are used on our Twitter account, Facebook and Google+ pages.

If you like Narayan's work and want to contact him for your needs, please e-mail him at narayangopalan82 [at] gmail [dot] com. Thanks Narayan.

Bangalore Aviation celebrates its fifth anniversary today. Thanks to our readers and supporters.

Five years ago to the date, Bangalore Aviation started its journey. 1,929 articles later, we have grown to become one of the best aviation blogs in the world. All thanks to you - our valued readers and supporters, within and outside the aviation industry.

On this anniversary I would like to share with you some of the highlights of our site, and some of the memorable articles, in my humble opinion, at Bangalore Aviation over the last five years. If I have missed any out please do share via the comment system.

In 2008, I started Bangalore Aviation to offer independent information and views on the aviation scenario in Bangalore. As you know Bangalore Aviation is a labour of love and not driven by commercial considerations. This ensures our independence and our ability to call a spade a spade. We may not be mass market, but I believe our ranking shows that we are respected.

When ever we visit trade shows, it thrills us, that journalists from the largest of news organisations to the smallest, senior to newbies, say hello to us, and tell us they are following us. It means a lot.

Over the years, we expanded our horizons to cover three distinct niches - airlines, airports, and aircraft, both in written form, and in photographs.

Highlights of the Bangalore Aviation site

Logo

Our logo has been designed by a dear supporter, Narayan Gopalan. He is an ace visualiser and brand consultant. Feel free to contact him for your needs. Thanks Narayan.

Our stats and rank

Our total page views and global rank is displayed in the right side-bar of the web page. As of today we are over 3.3 million page views, and ranked 10th globally amongst aviation blogs. Mobile users, and e-mail subscribers will not see these badges. So please do visit the main site, at least once in a while.

Social Media and off-line reading.

To offer you the ability to read us at your convenience. Visit the siderbar on the top right of the page to explore our three methods:
  • Daily e-mail subscription delivering new article snippets once a day direct to your mailbox.
  • RSS feeds to read the snippets and visit the site for articles you find interesting
  • Google Currents. The newest reader for IOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android (phones and tablets) devices. We need your support to grow our subscription base. Subscribe and download from here.
On Twitter, we have the official BangaloreAviation account (@BLRAviation). Both Vinay and Devesh have individual accounts also. Please follow all three accounts on Twitter.

We are also present on Facebook, Google+, and on Pinterest. Please do visit our pages and give us a thumbs-up.

Commenting system

We are very proud of our commenting system which is powered by Disqus, and used on many sites across the world. One of the best comments received in our early days is posted in this story.

We always welcome and receive regular interaction from our readers and are thankful to each of our commenters for sharing their time and thoughts. The most recent comments are posted in the bottom right of the page.

We are open to both brick-bats or bouquets.

You like us? great, please post that.

You have an alternate view? we welcome it; please post that too.

You disagree with us? share your views, we may not be correct and will be honoured to correct our stand, if needed.

You want to abuse us, sorry this is where we draw the line. We always post comments as long as they are not derogatory, personal or foul.

Due to the richness of the Disqus system, at present the commenting system is limited to the full web version. We are working to bring it on to the mobile platform.

Recommendations

To improve the site experience, we have recommendations to additional articles at the end of the page. Check them out. Again this is limited to our full web version. We are working to get this on the mobile version.

Due to the richness of Disqus, this commenting system is available only in the full web version online. We are working on bringing it to the mobile version as well.

The right sidebar

Is a treasure trove of snippets of information like subscription links, translation links, the most popular articles of the last 30 days, recent article, our ENTIRE archive, our rankings, links to get the latest stock prices on the Indian airlines, our blog roll recommending other sites to visit, etc. It all there to explore.

Some of our memorable articles

The last five years have been a challenge, but fun filled. The early years were devoted to airports and the challenges faced by the Bengaluru International Airport to get going. We had stories like holding BIAL to a higher standard and what an airport truly is and its economic and human impact. A trip report and how BIAL corrected the short-comings of its early days, and I was truly privileged to be given a "behind the scenes" look at how an airport functions by no less than the Chief of Operations, at that time, Marcel Hungerbuehler.

Two articles I am especially proud of, were the "Sanity Check" articles. The first found fault in the government's grandiose plans for a high speed rail link to airport, and as a responsible citizen, in the second, we proposed an alternate solution for rail connectivity.

As a consumer advocate and a believer in fair play, we wrote how passengers pay as much as 600% more fees to airports than airlines do.

Our analysis articles covered the crash of 2008, the cautious recovery in 2010 (also published in The Mint), and all the analyses, annual or topical or financial by Vinay Bhaskara.

Our exclusive one on one interviews with leaders in the aviation business are sought after. Sanjay Aggarwal and Neil Mills of SpiceJet, Dinesh Keskar of Boeing, Giorgio De Roni of GoAir, Masaru Onishi of Japan Airlines, and G.M. Toh of Singapore Airlines are just a few gurus who shared their insights with all of us.

An innocent question on an aviation forum made us write one of our most popular articles, a prosumers reference to technical information on runways. Another reference we are proud of is the series on the unique tail-art of Air India Express' Boeing 737s. In historical reference, my most emotion provoking article, for me at least, still remains the one on Concorde. We also covered the 40 year old rivalry between Boeing and Airbus.

Stories containing images of cabins are very popular. All of us like to research what to expect. Jet Airways' Boeing 777, Singapore Airlines' Airbus A330-300, Cathay Pacific's new Premium and International Economy class, or Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Humour and the unusual punctuated the otherwise serious business of aviation. Be it how Kingfisher Airlines made pigs and dogs fly, or the fire raising African mangoes, the award chopsticks of Japan Airlines, or how the A380 is too quiet for Emirates' pilots to get sleep.

One airline that has always attracted attention is Kingfisher Airlines. Bangalore Aviation detailed the initial signs of implosion at the airline when it sold its A340-500s to Arik Air of Nigeria, who gained a lot from the Doctor's extravagance. We covered the national carrier Air India, how it is abused, how do we solve the conundrum, or warning for the government to act. We also covered the meteoric expansion of the unofficial national carrier, Emirates.

The human nature for salaciousness drove many of the more regrettable stories of crashes and incidents like this video of the crash of a FedEx MD-11F at Tokyo Narita.

And we cannot complete our journey without all those beautiful images. Check out our photo albums here and here.

While thanking you for supporting us for the last five years, we will endeavour to repeat this exercise five years hence.

- Devesh Agarwal

Bangalore Aviation site changes: Your feedback is requested

Dear Readers

Over the last few weeks, we at Bangalore Aviation have been trying a few tweaks here and there.

We invite your feedback on whether the site is the same, better, worse? What can we do to improve?

You may notice we have trimmed the footer of the article and replaced with recommendations which are powered by the Disqus comment system and the Outbrain widget. Do you find this helpful?

Readers who get the daily e-mail would have been getting a summary instead of the whole article. We have switched back to a full article for you to experience the difference.

Do you prefer summaries or do you prefer the full article?

What are your views on Bangalore Aviation as a site? What do you like about us? What do you want us to remove?

Please do send back comments via the comment system or by e-mail to ba [at] bangaloreaviation [dot] com.

Thanks in advance

Greetings from India (Vinay)

For the first time since I joined Bangalore Aviation, I am posting from India; Bangalore to be exact. I am definitely excited to be back in India for only the second time since I lived here for a year back in 2003, and being on the ground here is an immensely enjoyable experience.

I will be in Bangalore today and tomorrow, followed by 3 days in Mumbai. From Bangalore to Mumbai I will be flying Air India (which will be very interesting), followed by my return on Lufthansa.

Devesh and I will be doing a couple of interviews with airlines/airports while I am here, and I will be going planespotting, hopefully in both locations.

1 year Anniversary for me (Vinay) at Bangalore Aviation

Well folks, my one year anniversary here at Bangalore Aviation has come and gone (August 11th was the correct date), and I would just like to take the opportunity to thank all of our wonderful readers and contributors/commenters. I would also like to thank Devesh for the wonderful opportunity he has given me to air my thoughts and opinions here.

That being said, this is your opportunity to give me some feedback. How have you liked my first year's worth of writing here at Bangalore Aviation? Is there any topic(s) you want me to post more about?

Also, here are some fun statistics about my first year at Bangalore Aviation. In my first year, I posted 114 posts, of which roughly 60% were pure analysis pieces. These 114 posts got more than 113,000 page views, or close to 1,000 views per post! And my top post, with more than 11,150 page views was this one: Airbus A320neo vs. Boeing 737-8 MAX: a battle that's just beginnin.

Happy Diwali to all Bangalore Aviation readers

From today, Diwali (the festival of lights) commences. For all Hindus in India and across the world, the five day festival is the largest and most important.

Today, the Diwali or Deepavali festival starts with Dhanteras (Dhan = wealth, Teras = 13th day of the lunar calendar). Every family will buy some item of wealth today; jewellery, gold or silver coins, a metal utensil, etc..

Tomorrow, the second day of the festival is Naraka Chaturdasi (Chaturdasi = 14th day of the lunar calendar), marking the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama.

Wednesday is Amavasya or the new moon. On the darkest day of the month, lamps and lights symbolically mark the dispelling of the darkness of ignorance by the light of knowledge. A grand puja worshipping Ganesh, the elephant headed god of wisdom, and the destroyer of obstacles, Shri MahaLakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Saraswati, the godess of knowledge, in their most benevolent mood, fulfilling the wishes of her devotees. Amavasya also tells the story of Lord Vishnu, who in his dwarf incarnation Vamana vanquished the king MahaBali, and banished him to patal-lok, the netherworld.

On the fourth day of Deepavali, Kartika Shudda Padyami, Bali who went to the netherworld and took the reins of his new kingdom, is allowed to return to the earthly world for one day as per the boon granted him by Lord Vishnu.

The fifth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya or Bhai Dooj, and on this day married sisters invite their brothers to their homes.

Along with Vinay and Vedant, I take great pleasure in extending our warmest wishes for a safe, happy and prosperous celebration and a joyous year ahead to all our readers and your loved ones.
