United States grants approval to Etihad-Jet Airways code share request

by Devesh Agarwal

On September 4th, Etihad Airways and Jet Airways had petitioned the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) to authorise them to code share i.e. put their marketing codes on each other airlines' flights. Download the original petition in PDF format here or scroll to end of the article to view it and the approval letter.
Etihad requests a blanket Statement of Authorization to permit it to display Jet Airways' "9W*" designator code on any current or future US-United Arab Emirates services operated by Etihad (These may be either nonstop services or services operated via an intermediate point or points; as such, codesharing will not necessarily take place on segments directly to/from the operating carrier's homeland).

Jet Airways requests a blanket Statement of Authorization to permit it to display Etihad's "EY*" designator code on any current or future US-India services operated by Jet Airways.

Initially, Etihad will display the 9W* code on flights operated by Etihad between Abu Dhabi on the one hand and Chicago, New York (JFK) and Washington, DC (IAD) on the other hand, for purposes of carrying Jet Airways' traffic between India and the United States on a blind-sector basis. Jet Airways will display the EY* code on flights operated by Jet Airways between Brussels, which is served as an intermediate point on its India-US services, and Newark, for purposes of carrying Etihad's traffic between the United Arab Emirates and the United States on a blind-sector basis.
The USDOT has provided its approval to the request.

The request though seems to be in conflict with the commercial cooperation agreement that is signed between the two airlines. The agreement reportedly states that Jet Airways will not fly to those destinations already served by Etihad, especially on the west-bound direction, except via Abu Dhabi, the base of Etihad.

The lucrative United States is one of the territories that fall under this. Jet has proposed flights from Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore via Abu Dhabi to New York, Newark, and Chicago. So will Jet Airways' current service from Brussels to the United States continue in the future? In a conference call the senior Jet Airways management called their Brussels hub a "long term engagement".

by Devesh Agarwal

German flag carrier Deutsche Lufthansa will start charging passengers fees for advance seat reservations (ASR). However, unlike fellow European carrier British Airways, Lufthansa will limit its fee to economy class as of now.

HON Circle Members and Senators as well as companions travelling with them are exempt from the ASR fees. British Airways first commenced service from London Heathrow to Chennai on November 3, 1988 with twice weekly flights via Kuwait City using a Lockheed TriStar L1011-385-1 aircraft. At that time, Terminal 4 at Heathrow airport was used. Today it is the ultra-large Terminal 5 or T5 as it is better known.

In October 1993, the flights were increased to four a week via Mumbai or Dubai using Boeing 767 and 747 aircraft. In November 1995 British Airways celebrated its 1000th flight to Chennai which at that time was a thrice weekly service via Mumbai using Boeing 747s. In the summer 1997 time-table the airline suspended its flights to the city. In October 1998 British Airways re-started twice weekly services to Chennai using the Boeing 747-400. This service was upgraded to five a week in 2008.

Bombardier discloses CDB Leasing Co., Ltd. China as customer for last year CSeries order

By BA Staff

Image courtesy Wikipedia. Author Alexandre Gouger.
Bombardier Aerospace announced that CDB Leasing Co., Ltd. (CLC), one of China's top leasing companies, is the previously announced undisclosed customer that signed a conditional purchase agreement for five CS100 and 10 CS300 jetliners. The purchase agreement also includes options on an additional five CS100 and 10 CS300 aircraft, for a total of up to 30 CSeries aircraft. This agreement was initially announced as a conditional order from an undisclosed customer for five CS100 and 10 CS300 jetliners on July 8, 2012.

Canada's foreign minister John Baird said:
"This announcement, witnessed at the highest levels by both governments, reflects extremely well on the cooperation between Bombardier and China in the aviation sector, as well as on the overall economic relations between Canada and China."
As previously announced by Bombardier, based on list prices of CS100 and CS300 aircraft, the contract is valued at approximately $1.02 billion US. Should all 15 options be exercised, the value of the contract would increase to $2.07 billion US.

CLC Chairman Mr. Wang said:
"Given ongoing high fuel prices and increased environmental concerns, older and less efficient aircraft represent one of the greatest challenges to airlines. Following an in-depth analysis of existing and re-engined aircraft, the CSeries family of airliners, with its unmatched economics, advanced technology, excellent operational flexibility, as well as its outstanding performance seemed like the obvious choice and shows great potential for operators in China and abroad."

Boeing reports robust third quarter fiscal 2013 results. Raises full year earnings guidance

by Devesh Agarwal

Chicago based, US aerospace and defence giant The Boeing Company reported earnings of $1,160 million, a massive 12% jump in its third-quarter profit compared to $1,030 million from the same period a year ago. The company has also raised its 2013 financial performance outlook, based on an increase in commercial aircraft deliveries.

Key highlights of the quarter
  • Core Earnings Per Share (non-GAAP)* rose 16% to $1.80 on strong operating performance; GAAP EPS of $1.51
  • Revenue increased 11% to $22.1 billion reflecting higher commercial deliveries
  • Backlog grew to a record $415 billion, including $27 billion of net orders during the quarter
  • Operating cash flow before pension contributions increased to $4.3 billion
  • 2013 Core EPS guidance increased to between $6.50 and $6.65 (previously forecast of $6.20 to $6.40); GAAP EPS to between $5.40 and $5.5
Boeing Chairman, President and CEO Jim McNerney said
"Consistently strong operating performance is driving higher earnings, revenue and cash flow as we deliver on our record backlog and return increased value to shareholders,"  "During the quarter, Commercial Airplanes completed the first flight of the 787-9 and delivered 170 airplanes, while Defense, Space & Security maintained solid performance and captured $7 billion in new orders. Despite the uncertainty of the U.S. defense market, overall our customer-focused business strategies and disciplined execution on our programs are producing the results we expect, and our strong year-to-date performance and positive outlook allow us to increase our 2013 guidance for earnings and operating cash flow."

Boeing Commercial Airplanes was the star performer with third-quarter profits of $1,620 million, up 40%, on revenue of $14 billion, and operating margin improving to 11.6%. During the quarter, the 787-9 completed first flight. The company intends to increase the 787 production rate from 10 to 12 per month in 2016, and to 14 per month before the end of the decade. The division booked 200 net orders during the quarter with a backlog of nearly 4,800 airplanes valued at $345 billion.

Boeing Defense, Space & Security's third-quarter revenue was $8 billion ($8,000 million), while operating margin was 8.4%. Profits fell by 19%, mainly due to a profit fall of 48% in Boeing Military Aircraft (BMA) whose third-quarter revenue was $3.5 billion, primarily reflecting lower delivery volume. Operating margin at BMA decreased to 6.2%, impacted by mix and one-time charges on the F-15 and C-17 programs. During the quarter, BMA was awarded a low-rate initial production award for 13 P-8A Poseidon aircraft.

Network & Space Systems (N&SS) third-quarter revenue was $2.2 billion, reflecting higher sales of Delta inventory and revenue in the Space Launch System program, and operating margin was 8.7%. During the quarter, N&SS was awarded a contract by Mexico's Satmex for an additional 702 small satellite.

Global Services & Support (GS&S) third-quarter revenue was $2.3 billion, due to higher volume in maintenance, modifications and upgrades. Operating margin was 11.4%. During the quarter, GS&S achieved first flight on the QF-16 unmanned aircraft and was also awarded a contract by the U.S. Air Force for 56 additional replacement wings for the A-10 aircraft.

Backlog at Defense, Space & Security was $70 billion, of which 38% represents orders with international customers.

Boeing lowers 747-8 production rate as demand slows

By BA Staff

Boeing announced that it will adjust the production rate for the 747-8 program from 1.75 airplanes to 1.5 airplanes per month through 2015 because of lower market demand for large passenger and freighter airplanes.

Eric Lindblad, vice president and general manager, 747 Program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes said:
"This production adjustment better aligns us with near-term demand while stabilizing our production flow, and better positions the program to offer the 747-8's compelling economics and performance when the market recovers. Although we are making a small adjustment to our production rate, it doesn't change our confidence in the 747-8 or our commitment to the program."
The company expects long-term average growth in the air cargo market to begin returning in 2014, and forecasts global demand for 760 large airplanes (such as the 747-8) over the next 20 years, valued at $280 billion. To date, the 747-8 has accumulated 107 orders for passenger and cargo versions, 56 of which have been delivered. The first delivery at the new production rate is expected in early 2014. The production rate change is not expected to have a significant financial impact.

Etihad Airways and Korean Air expand codeshare agreement

By BA Staff

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has expanded its codeshare agreement with Korean Air, South Korea’s largest airline, to include six new destinations.

In the second phase of cooperation, Etihad Airways will place its EY code on Korean Air services from Seoul Incheon to Honolulu, Vancouver and Hong Kong. Korean Air will place its KE code on Etihad Airways’ flights from Abu Dhabi to Johannesburg, Muscat and, subject to government approval, Khartoum.

The new arrangements augment the airlines’ existing codeshare services between Abu Dhabi and Seoul Incheon.

Etihad Airways’ President and Chief Executive Officer James Hogan said the expanded codeshare with Korean Air would enable both airlines to grow their networks in a mutually beneficial way and broaden their appeal to world travellers:
“The three new codeshare destinations enhance Etihad Airways’ business and leisure travel offering to the Asia Pacific and North America. The flights to Honolulu and Vancouver, in particular, will provide convenient one-stop access from Abu Dhabi to these two popular North American destinations. This is a natural development of the codeshare agreement with Korean Air which we signed in July this year, and we look forward to broadening the scope of cooperation even further in the future.”
Mr Hogan noted that Etihad Airways’ strategy of partnerships with airlines such as Korean Air was helping grow tourism from around the world to its Abu Dhabi home and hub:
“The introduction of new codeshare routes enables us to rapidly expand our network and drive more leisure and business traffic to and through our Abu Dhabi hub. Last year alone, Etihad Airways carried 10.2 million passengers through Abu Dhabi. Increasing international visitors to Abu Dhabi is key to enabling economic growth in the Emirate and helping realise the Government’s visionary Abu Dhabi 2030 plan. We forecast this trend will continue with the opening of new routes from Asia and North America.”
Etihad Airways and Korean Air have had a successful commercial partnership since August 2009 when the airlines signed a special pro rata agreement and interline partnership. The airlines commenced codeshare operations between Abu Dhabi and Seoul Incheon on July 22, 2013.

Members of Etihad Airways’ Etihad Guest and Korean Air’s SKYPASS loyalty programs enjoy reciprocal benefits. These include lounge access, priority check-in and excess baggage allowances for top tier program members and the ability to earn and burn frequent flyer points on Etihad Airways and Korean Air flights.

Aerolineas Argentinas signs agreement with Boeing to purchase 20 737-800s

By BA Staff

Boeing and Aerolineas Argentinas, the flag carrier of Argentina, and a member of the SkyTeam alliance, have completed an agreement for 20 Next-Generation 737-800 airplanes. The agreement is valued at $1.8 billion at list prices. When the order is finalized, it will be posted as a firm order to the Boeing orders and deliveries website.

At a signing ceremony in Buenos Aires today, Dr. Mariano Recalde, president of Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral Lineas Aereas, and Van Rex Gallard, vice president of Sales, Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, formalized the agreement, which will help Aerolineas build on a fleet of 26 Next-Generation 737s currently operated by the Argentine carrier.

Dr. Recalde said:
"This is a landmark order for our company, both in the number of aircraft and in what they signify for our fleet. This agreement is a key part of a greater plan to renew our fleet and prepare our operations to accommodate growing demand. The Boeing Next-Generation 737-800, which has more seats than our current single-aisle fleet, will give us more flexibility to operate both domestic and regional routes.
Gallard noted that the agreement extends a long legacy of partnership between Boeing and Aerolineas Argentinas:
"Our partnership with Aerolineas extends back to the days of the Douglas DC-3. We have worked side by side with Aerolineas to help provide world-class aviation to the people of Argentina. Aviation is a key element in economic growth and development, and the success of Aerolineas Argentinas' transformation strategy, helped by the addition of the most efficient single-aisle airplanes flying, will help drive Argentina further ahead in the 21st century,"

Trip report: Air France A330-200 business class Bangalore Paris Mumbai - new service attitude is producing results

by Devesh Agarwal

Until recently, like many others, I was under the opinion Air France was a stuffy airline, an uncaring crew, and one I was not likely to fly any time soon. Recently, I was a guest of Air France to attend the launch of their new "Best and Beyond" campaign in Paris, and had the opportunity to fly the airline in business class from Bangalore to Paris and back to Mumbai.

Air France A330-200 business class cabin.
Blue and white are soothing colours in the calm oasis of the Air France business class on board the A330-200

I also flew the airline, on my own account, in economy class between Paris CDG and Amsterdam Schiphol.

Over the coming weeks, I shall review various aspects of the airline, including trip reports, the Paris Charles De Gaulle hub, the Salon lounges, and also the Best and Beyond campaign.

Trip Report

Today, we commence with the trip report Bangalore to Paris Charles De Gaulle. AF191. Scheduled departure 01:50. Actual departure 02:30 (40 minute delay). Scheduled arrival 08:35. Actual arrival 08:50. Aircraft Airbus A330-200 registration F-GZCE.

Click on the photos below to see a high resolution light-box view.

New attitude

A critical component, of the new "Best and Beyond" initiative, meant to bring passengers back to Air France, is staff attitude. The change is visible starting right from the kerbside. I found a porter with a SkyPriority plaque waiting when you arrive.

The SkyPriority service is offered to all premium class passengers from Premium Economy upwards, and to all SkyTeam elite members from Silver level on upwards. Other than the erstwhile Kingfisher, I have not seen any other airline offer a kerbside porter service in Bangalore. Even overseas, I have seen it offered only to first class passengers.

Check-in, lounge and boarding

Despite my many requests for him to help other passengers, the porter insisted, and whisked me in to the terminal, expediting the cumbersome passport check by the CISF. I was late, arriving at 1:05am for a scheduled 1:50am flight, but which was delayed to 2:30am. Check-in was smooth, quick and efficient. My boarding passes were issued, and my baggage checked, all the way to Amsterdam.

SkyPriority Check-in express lane Air France Bengaluru International Airport Bangalore, India
The SkyPriority lane at the check-in desks at Bengaluru International Airport.

Off I went, through immigration, on to the customs desk to declare all my camera equipment, and then through security, where I am required to take out each piece of camera equipment before scanning the bag, and where my cigarette lighter was seized, as it is not allowed. This is contradictory to my experiences at the security checks of 12 different airports in three continents I have been to in the last six months. But security checks at Indian airports are a whole different subject.

I barely had time to step inside the Oberoi run lounge at the Bengaluru International Airport, and I was thankful. The lounge is badly over-crowded, stuffy, hot, and poorly equipped to handle to the volume of premium passengers departing Bangalore. I am told that the new terminal expansion will solve this problem. Expect a separate article on this subject later.

Boarding was a smooth affair, and well managed.

Cabin product

You step in to a very calm and soothing cabin decked out in navy blue and white. Air France aircraft may have a reputation for being dirty looking on the outside, but the inside was spic and span. The smiles and welcome by the cabin crew, were genuine and warm.

Note: All the pictures below were shot, by me, in the natural light of the cabin. No flash was used

The business class has 40 seats in two sections, in a six abreast 2-2-2 layout. 61 inch pitch and 21.5 inch seat width. It features shell seats and unlike some of the other angled lay flat seats, has a good headrest which conforms to the rest of the seat when it reclines fully. The arm-rest goes down during the recline adding to the width. You will also find the lack of the bottom end of the leg-rest. Instead Air France provides a type of cubby-hole inside the seat-back which I found more comfortable than any of the lay-flat seats I have experienced till now. I am a notoriously poor sleeper on angle lay-flat seats, but I did manage about four hours in Air France, which is the longest. So the seats win my seal of approval.

Air France A330-200 business class seat. Sitting and reclining positions compared.
Business class seats in the upright and fully reclined position

Unlike other premium economy cabins which are more of an upgraded economy class, on the Air France Airbus A330-200, the premium economy cabin almost identical to the business class cabin, with the exception of the one additional seat to give a seven abreast 2-3-2 layout. There are 21 seats in three rows. 38 inch seat pitch, 19 inch seat width. I was later informed that Air France is the only airline that uses the similar shell seats in its premium economy class.

The economy class cabin is bright in the national colours of France, blue, red and white. The 147 seats are in the Airbus standard, eight abreast in a 2-4-2 configuration. 32 inch seat pitch, 18 inch seat width.

The trip, service, meals, in-flight entertainment

We departed at 2:30am, about 40 minutes past our scheduled departure. Trip time 10h15m. The flight route was from Bangalore, NNW, over Mumbai, turning WNW skirting the southern coast of Pakistan, turning NW entering Iran near Chabahar close to the Pakistan border, through Azerbaijan, over Tbilisi, Georgia, over Sevastopol in Southern Russia, Moldova, turn westerly, skirting northern Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, southern Czech Republic, Germany, in to France.

The flight was quite bumpy from take-off, so meal service was slightly delayed. The French are gastronomes and the meals reflect it. The fish I had was on of the better ones I have had anywhere, on board, or on ground. Deliciously prepared, cooked to creamy perfection, not rubbery at all.

The wine list was unusual and offered decent wines, but are not a match to the cellars of Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qantas, or even Lufthansa. Considering wine and France are inseparable, this is an area the airline has to improve on.

The pre-arrival breakfast service was good. Nice breads, butter, preserves, and an espresso machine on-board for my double espressos kept me happy.

Breakfast pre-arrival meal service Air France business class
Breakfast service prior to arrival in Paris

Through the flight, the crew puts out a small buffet near the galley with fruits, cheeses, small sandwiches, nuts and chocolates for those wanting a small snack.

Through the flight the cabin crew service was good, attentive and responsive. While Air France still has a way to go before it catches up to the leaders Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific, the change in attitude is refreshing, and service levels are close to its main European competitor Lufthansa. This is a crucial advance for Air France in its efforts to attract back lost passengers.

If there was a let down, it was the in-flight entertainment (IFE), audio video on-demand (AVOD) system. While the content was good, it was fairly limited, and the screens are not too big. The user interface, and its navigation is, clunky and tests your patience. For a passenger flying Air France long haul about two or three flights a month, it is okay, but more than that, and you will start feeling the pinch of the lack of volume in terms of content.

Paris Arrivals lounge

All Air France-KLM long haul international flights to and from Paris CDG airport are from terminal 2E on concourses K, L, M. The concourse names are no coincidence. Air France had ground staff stationed who patiently explained each enquiring passenger how to get to their respective flights. Another sign of the changed attitude at Air France.

A hidden gem of information, at Paris, is the Arrivals Salon Lounge of Air France. Tucked away at the junction of terminals 2C and 2A, this petite lounge is easy to miss. I must apologise to you, our dear readers, but the memory card of the pictures of this lounge got corrupted, and I have none to share with you at the moment. If I can revive the pictures in any way, I will surely share them.

If you are arriving in to Paris, or have a longish connection (two or more hours) to a Schengen country, this lounge is a must visit. It has a great set of shower facilities, with one of the most complicated shower temples I have seen. Multiple jets blasting hot water just soothe those tired muscles. The lounge provides a complete toilet kit with L'Occitane en Provence personal care products, including a razor and toothbrush.

Once showered, there is a great breakfast. Despite a small area, I found the breakfast spread better than the large Salon departure lounges in concourse K when I departed back to Mumbai. There is the usual fantastic French breads, along with butter, preserves, and charcuterie. Eggs, fruits, yoghurt, crackers, cheese, varieties of drinks complete the feast.

Paris Amsterdam Paris domestic flights

Showered and fed, I headed to terminal 2F from where all the Air France flights to Schengen countries depart. Very honestly, this one hour flight both onward to Amsterdam and return, was extremely routine, pretty much any other short-distance domestic flight. However, even on this short duration, the change in Air France attitude was noticeable.

The arrival concourse of Terminal 2F is extremely futuristic with its metal and glass construction. Makes on feel like they are in some Sci-Fi movie.

Paris Mumbai flight

An almost carbon copy of the Bangalore Paris flight, except for a more elaborate lunch starting with an L'amuse-bouche, appetiser, main course, cheese tray, and dessert. Great for a foodie like me.

The aircraft coincidentally was the same one I had flown from Bangalore to Paris, just five days earlier, Airbus A330-200 registration F-GZCE. We departed on schedule, and thanks to some fantastic tailwinds, made it to Bombay one hour ahead of schedule.

Summary

I flew Air France after a gap of almost 25 years. The business class is much like other European carriers, but with a much more calm and soothing touch, compared to the energy of Lufthansa's new business class. The change in crew attitude was refreshing, and it appears to be yielding results. There was only one seat free in business class, and none free in premium economy on my outbound flight. Even on the return to Mumbai, the flight had just one seat empty.

I was informed later, that AF191/192 the Paris Bangalore route goes full almost all days of the week in both business and premium economy classes. If anything, Air France has spare seats only in economy class. Considering it was a Thursday night I flew to Paris, and a Wednesday morning I returned to Mumbai, this shows the positive results of a good overall hard and soft product.

Note: I was a guest of Air France on the India to Paris segments. The Paris Amsterdam v.v. segments were on my account.

India's tallest Air Traffic Control tower, at Mumbai airport, inaugurated

By BA Staff

Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), inaugurated India’s tallest ATC tower with a height of 83.8 metre and built within an area of 2,800 square metres.

The location and the height of the new ATC tower will enable the tower controllers to have unobstructed view of the entire operational area, which will help in optimizing air traffic separation and increase the traffic handling capacity at the airport.

The tower will be equipped with the latest technology including electronic flight strips which will soften the work load of the tower controllers, enhance safety and overall capacity of the airport.

The airport operating company Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) is upgrading the air-side with new taxiways and rapid-exit taxiways to help reduce the time aircraft occupy the runway to further increase the ability of the airport to handle more flights per hour.

GVK CSIA awarded the iconic design and architecture project to Hong Kong based renowned architectural design firm HOK and international engineering design firm ARUP following a global architectural and engineering design competition. International lighting consultant Spiers and Majors were mandated for the innovatively designed lighting of the tower to bring out the sculptural qualities of the tower.

Qatar Airways to fly to Miami from June 2014

by Devesh Agarwal

Flag carrier, Qatar Airways, has announced Miami to be its sixth destination in the United States with flights beginning June 10, 2014.

The airline will offer four non-stop flights a week from Doha using a Boeing 777-200LR aircraft in a two class configuration with 42 lie-flat seats in business class, and 217 seats in economy.

The proposed schedule dove-tails well with flights to the Indian sub-continent, which arrive in to Doha early morning, and depart at night.

Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday
QR777 departs Doha 08:40 (8:40am) arrives Miami MIA 17:20 (5:20pm). Travel time: 15h40m.
QR778 departs Miami 21:15 (9:15pm) arrives Doha 18:20 (6:20pm) the next day. Travel time: 14h20m.

As it prepares to enter the oneworld alliance, this is a good move by Qatar Airways as Miami is the gateway to Latin America for oneworld original member American Airlines. Qatar already operates to American's hub in Chicago, and to Houston, New York (JFK), and Washington D.C. (Dulles), and will add Philadelphia in April 2014.

Alaska Airlines dedicates ‘Spirit of Education' aircraft to nation's first college preparatory, Aviation-Themed high school

By BA Staff

Local business and government leaders joined students, educators and alumni from Raisbeck Aviation High School onboard a specially themed Alaska Airlines jet for the grand opening of the new facility for the nation's first public, college preparatory, aviation-themed high school.

The "Spirit of Education," a Boeing 737-900ER, is dedicated to the students and staff of Raisbeck Aviation High School and will fly for six months around the carrier's route network.

Among the passengers onboard Flight 9401 was senior Austin Spores of Redmond, Wash., who commutes two hours to school every day. Spores, who is getting his private pilot's license, plans to pursue a career as a commercial pilot.

Like all students who choose to attend RAHS instead of a traditional secondary school, Spores had a strong interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Last summer, he interned as a dispatcher for Seattle-based Kenmore Air and hopes to study aeronautics at the University of North Dakota or Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University after graduating next June.

Spores said:
"I've been surrounded by aviation my entire life, so being in an aviation-themed environment like Raisbeck Aviation High School is a dream come true."
Alaska Airlines employees have mentored and volunteered with students interested in commercial aviation since the school's inception in 2004. As a founding sponsor, the airline pledged $1.5 million in a public/private partnership to build the $44.5 million state-of-the-art school designed to educate the next generation of scientists, engineers, and other aviation and aerospace-focused professionals.

Brad Tilden, Alaska Airlines' president and CEO said:
"Investing in Raisbeck Aviation High School is an investment in the youth of our community. Students attending this STEM school are poised to bring much-needed innovation to our industry, which could further improve the safety, efficiency and environmental performance of commercial aviation. Raisbeck Aviation High School, part of Highline Public Schools, is located on the grounds of the Museum of Flight near Boeing Field to encourage partnerships with aviation and aerospace leaders and ensure relevance in the instructional program.
Reba Gilman, Raisbeck Aviation High School CEO and principal said:
"Having this school on the grounds of the Museum of Flight, so close to more than 200 aviation industry businesses like Boeing and Alaska Airlines, gives our students something truly special — an unparalleled chance to be simultaneously immersed in learning and industry."
Highlights of Raisbeck Aviation High School:
  • 400 students from 27 school districts travel by car, train, boat/ferry or bus to attend the public school, located in Tukwila, Wash.
  • Students of RAHS consistently rank in the top 5 percent in Washington state assessments. The school's performance ranks 252nd out of 22,000 nationwide high schools according to US News & World Report. About three-quarters of RAHS students intend to pursue STEM-related education at universities including Stanford, Harvard, Cornell and MIT.
  • The school is designed for project-based instructional programs, with labs that enable students to build robots, rockets, model airplanes and even a real airplane.
  • Rather than a traditional library, the school provides classroom libraries and access to the Museum of Flight's extensive archives and library. A computer is provided to each student.
  • During the summer, the school will be used by the museum for science camps — assuring year-round utilization of the building as well as introducing younger children to Raisbeck Aviation High School.
  • All RAHS students are connected with a mentor in an aviation/aerospace-related field. Students are also placed in internships in high-demand STEM workplaces such as Boeing, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Port of Seattle.

Alaska Airlines Announces Q400s Will Use Jet Bridge for Warm Boarding in Fairbanks

By BA Staff

Fairbanks residents flying on Alaska Airlines' Bombardier Q400s starting next March will board and deplane the aircraft using the existing jet bridge at Fairbanks International Airport. The carrier will modify the jet bridge at Gate 1 to provide passengers with warm, easy access to their flights on the turboprop aircraft.

Marilyn Romano, Alaska Airlines' regional vice president – Alaska said:
"We listened to customer concerns about boarding the plane outside during the winter and took our time to carefully evaluate all of our options. With slight modifications to the existing jet bridge, our customers traveling between Fairbanks and Anchorage will have a way to board and deplane that protects them from the cold winter weather and is also safe and accessible for travelers with limited mobility."
Alaska Airlines is exploring a  boarding solution for customers boarding and deplaning the Q400 at Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, Romano said.

Starting next March, Alaska will increase service between Anchorage and Fairbanks from seven to nine daily flights; eight flights will be operated with the Q400 and one with a Boeing 737. Additionally, the Q400 will replace an Alaska 737 on one of two daily round-trip flights between Anchorage and Kodiak. Initial service to Kodiak will begin March 3 and end April 30, then resume again for seasonal service between October and April.
